How to Keep a Text Conversation Going

Threads die when both people answer and nobody asks. They also die when one person asks five things.

The +1 rule

Answer what they asked, then add one thing: a question, a plan, or a detail they can react to. Not three. One.

Follow the thing they actually cared about

If they mentioned a trip, don’t pivot to your job. People tell you what they want to talk about. Ignore that and the thread becomes an interview.

When to stop

A conversation that is over should end. “Anyway, I’ll see you Thursday” is a gift. AI that always asks another question is how you get that slightly needy extra line. Delete it.

If you are stuck on the next line

That’s a reply, not an opener. Copy their last message so the draft isn’t generic. Then apply the +1 rule by hand.

Questions this article answers

What if they send one-word replies?

Match them or move to a plan. Don’t keep interviewing.

Is double-texting bad?

One extra bubble with new information is fine. Repeating the same ask is not.

Should I use Hello mid-thread?

Hello is for starting. Mid-thread is Reply for or your own words.

Work threads?

End with the next action, not a new social question.
