How to Reply to a Text
Most texts need a clear answer, not a performance. The hard part is starting. The useful part is stopping.
A reply has three jobs
- Show you saw the message.
- Answer the actual question.
- Add at most one next step — a time, a question, or a stop.
If you cannot name the question, you are not ready to reply. Reread the last line, not the whole thread.
Match length
“You free Thursday?” does not need a paragraph. A long incoming message can take a longer answer, but still one idea per bubble. People bounce off walls of text on a phone.
When you freeze
Send a short honest line (“Need ten minutes to check”) instead of disappearing. Silence reads as a decision. Delay is cheaper than a wrong yes.
